This 5-minute Lightning Talk will introduce the publishing community to Smashwords, a new digital publishing startup that promises to do for self-published ebook authors what YouTube did for amateur video producers.
Smashwords is a new digital publishing platform that provides authors with powerful tools that put them in control over the sales, marketing, sampling, and licensing of their works.
The presentation will begin with a summary of why Coker believes the traditional book publishing industry is broken, from the perspective of authors, publishers, and consumers.
Coker will introduce the audience to Smashwords and propose how publishers can leverage Smashwords to increase the profitability of their businesses.
Mark Coker is founder and CEO of Smashwords, an ebook publishing and distribution platform for authors, publishers and their readers. Smashwords launched February 2008 at Tools of Change in New York.
Mark’s previous startup, BestCalls.com, an online directory of investor events, was acquired in 2003 and is now owned and operated by the Nasdaq Stock Exchange.
Mark is also co-author, with his wife, of Boob Tube, a novel that explores the dark side of Hollywood celebrity. It was his frustration trying to get Boob Tube published that led him to develop Smashwords.
