This session will feature a round-table discussion with industry experts explaining the ways in which the book industry is responding to the mounting pressure to “green the presses.” A 2008 report co-published by the Book Industry Study Group and Green Press Initiative gave us the first-ever review of the environmental impact of the U.S. book industry, describing and measuring the damaging effect our paper-intensive industry has on climate and on forests. At the same time, the report revealed the deep commitment of many companies to environmental improvements and the innovative ways they are finding to minimize the impact they have. Our panel will share some of the real-life steps that have already been taken, and discuss practical ways to improve our performance in the future, including asking whether digital publishing is the answer.

Book Industry Study Group

Michael Healy is the Executive Director of the Book Industry Study Group (BISG), a non-profit membership body established in New York more than thirty years ago to improve the efficiency of the book industry through standards, research and information.

Michael has 25 years experience in the book industry, and before joining BISG in 2006 he spent seven years as Editorial Director of Nielsen Book Services, a leading supplier of information, transaction and market measurement services to the international book industry.

For much his career Michael has been involved in the development and management of standards for the book industry and its supply chain, with particular focus on standards for product identification, metadata and electronic commerce. He has been Chairman of the International ISBN Agency and a director of Book Industry Communication and the International DOI Foundation.

Andrew Van Der Laan is a Director at Random House, where he leads sustainability efforts as the Deputy Chairman of RH US’s employee Green Committee and project manager for the Environmental Paper Initiative. He is also RH US’s representative for the EPA Climate Leaders program, as well as the Bertelsmann BeGreen team, the group tasked by the Bertelsmann Executive Board with developing a corporate climate change strategy. Andrew participates in several industry and trade association working groups, most notably as the chairman of the Book Industry Environmental Council. He is on the Board of Directors of GreenMap.org.
