The mobile phone is the most prevalent consumer electronic device in Africa. Uptake has been, and continues to be, phenomenal. On a continent where the Kindle or iPad is simply not going see such high uptake, publishing to mobile phones holds huge potential for this “mobile-rich” but “book-poor” context.
The moderator, Steve Vosloo, heads up the m4Lit (mobile phones for literacy) project in South Africa (SA). The project publishes m-novels for teens to provide an additional channel for them to read and write. Findings from the 2009 pilot project will be shared as way of opening the discussion around the wider topic of publishing and engaging readers in Africa via mobile phones (and not iPhones at that). Initial topics to kick start the discussion: understanding the audience, payment options in Africa, and delivery platforms for Africa.
