HTML, the hypertext language of the Web, did not have significant evolution in the past decade. It has however found its way in many applications and context, from television to electronic books. EPUB, a e-book standard done by the International Digital Puyblishing Forum (IDPF), has been using XHTML 1.1 to construct the content of a book as of version 2.0. Going from a document published on the Web to a document viewable in ebook readers has never been so easy since it’s becoming a matter of simple transfortmation.

The new version of HTML, called HTML5, adds several new functionalities that are relevant to the publishing world. Headers, footers, figure captions, article, or section are being introduced to facilitate the management of documents published on the Web and are directly applicable to the publishing industry. SVG, the scalable vector graphic language, or MathML, the mathematical language, are also fully part of the new HTML platform and useable in non-dynamic environment. WOFF, the new open font format for the Web, will also be introduced.
