Long standing research has supported the main learning modalities of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic, and that has influenced educational publishing for eons. But when you strip away the limitations of the printed page, what truly is educational publishing aside from content development and delivery?
In academic publishing, I believe with traditional books, something is lost in the translation. Most authors of academic content are instructors, teachers. They do not write pages of text on the board in the classroom, they instruct through visual cues and materials, in labs, and with their projectors. This is the essence of teaching, and when distilled into text and the written page, it loses something.
We need to flip the traditional model of academic content development on it’s head. Rather than develop content through text creation and develop accompanying pictures/images/figures when needed, why not develop the concepts through visual development and then add text or descriptions where appropriate? The visual component is at the center of the classroom experience, and should be the center of educational publishing in the future.
The future of visual content development will be the dynamic, interactive visuals (what I call ‘immersive’) that show, in instructionally sound ways, difficult to learn concepts. I believe this is the essence of digital publishing, unlocking what’s possible in publishing directly contributing to teaching and communicating with the individual, the ‘reader’, students. As students remember fondly their teachers and despised their texts, what if future content could be as engaging and influential as teachers?
