Robbie Allen is the Founder and CEO of Automated Insights, Inc., a VC-backed startup based in Durham, NC. Robbie was formerly a Distinguished Engineer, IT at Cisco. He has Masters degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering and System Design Management from MIT. He’s the author or co-author of ten books covering a variety of technical topics.
Beat Barblan serves as Director of Identifier Services at Bowker. He is responsible for such identifier asset management and discoverability solutions as ISBN, ISTC, ISNI and DOI. These solutions are renowned for their ability to standardize works across the book industry and content services supply chain, benefitting publishers, self publishers, authors, and other book industry professionals. Bowker is an affiliated business of ProQuest.
Mr. Barblan joined Bowker in 2007 as Product Manager for the company’s Supply Chain business, overseeing new development and maintenance for Pubnet and PubEasy, the publishing industry’s premier electronic ordering tools. Prior to joining Bowker, Mr. Barblan was Sr. Product Manager at Wolters Kluwer / Ovid where he helped launch the OvidSP platform.
Betsy Beaumon has served for more than twenty years as a technology executive and entrepreneur. She is a former Senior Director for BEA Systems, Inc. and managed international e-business initiatives for Cisco Systems, Inc. In 1995, she founded Social Online Service, the first web-based information and referral service for social service organizations. As Executive Director of the company, Betsy was an early supporter of Web accessibility standards.
Betsy was also one of the founders of TradeBeam Inc., a provider of global trade management software services. She began her career in engineering, then moved into product management for GTE and Lam Research Corporation.
Betsy brings an extensive background managing high growth organizations to her leadership of the Benetech Literacy Program. Her past experience in operations, marketing, product management, services, training and strategic partnerships supports the ongoing expansion of Benetech’s Bookshare and Route 66 Literacy projects.
Betsy earned a BSEE from Northwestern University. Active in volunteer work, Betsy has taught English classes to adult students in Tanzania.
Tomas Bella is the Ceo of Piano Media, a Slovak-based enterprise that launched the world’s first nation-wide pay-wall system first in Slovakia (May 2011) and then in Slovenia (January 2012). Prior to starting Piano he worked at Slovakia’s biggest broadsheet newspaper, SME, as a reporter, editor-in-chief and deputy director of the online news portal Sme.sk. He lectures in online media at the Pan European University in Bratislava and is a member of the Press Council of the Slovak Republic.
Larry Bennett is the president of Distribution Services at Bookmasters with responsibility for growing the company’s base of domestic and international print and eBook client publishers. He also serves as the head of the company’s foreign-language book development and distribution efforts in the United States and abroad.
Prior to joining Bookmasters, Bennett was a vice president at Baker & Taylor, managing its digital print media program. Prior to that, he managed the foreign language department at Baker & Taylor. In the past, Bennett was president of Public Square Books, a distribution and publishing company, and CEO of National Children’s Book Project, LLC, a children’s book publishing company. Bennett is fluent in several languages including Spanish, French, and Italian. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.
Kirk is a seasoned digital media professional specializing in web publishing systems, SEO, and user experience. As principal of Oxford Media Works Kirk consults with clients on a range of issues related to web publishing and digital media strategies. Kirk shares his knowledge of web content management systems at WP Apprentice, an online training portal designed to help publishers use WordPress as a CMS.
Todd Bottorff has served as President and Publisher of Turner Publishing since 2002. Mr. Bottorff earned degrees in liberal arts from the University of Virginia and a masters of business administration from Harvard University. Prior to Turner Publishing, Mr. Bottorff worked as a business consultant at McKinsey & Company and served as a senior member of the management team for a venture-funded technology startup and a publicly listed dot-com turnaround.
Mr. Bottorff’s civic responsibilities include serving as a board member of Npt, Nashville’s public television station, as a Board Member of Humanities Tennessee including the subcommittee that oversees the Southern Festival of Books, and on the Alumni Board of Montgomery Bell Academy.
Peter Brantley is the Director of the BookServer Project at the Internet Archive, a San Francisco-based not for profit library. He contributes regularly to several blogs on libraries and publishing, discussing transformations in media and information access. He serves on the board of the International Digital Publishing Forum, the standards setting body for digital books. Peter has significant experience with academic research libraries and digital library development programs, and was previously the Executive Director of the Digital Library Federation, a not for profit membership organization of research and national libraries.
Mr. Brewster, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for the Ingram Content Group, is responsible for strategic partnerships and planning for the company. Mr. Brewster is one of the founding executives of Lightning Source, an Ingram Content Group company, leading its initial startup, establishing and growing LSI’s key partnerships, and overseeing its operations.
Mr. Brewster has a B.S. in Business Management from the University of Florida and an MBA from the University of Central Florida. After graduation he spent 14 years with IBM where he held several executive positions including Business Unit Executive of marketing operations for IBM Tennessee, CFO for IBM Tennessee operations, and Marketing Manager. He was then founder and CEO of an entrepreneurial venture specializing in marketing consumer technology, financial, and communications products. Mr. Brewster is married with three daughters
Jon Bruner is a data journalist who approaches questions that interest him by writing and coding. He is co-chair of the O’Reilly Solid conference, focused on the intersection between software and the physical world, and he oversees O’Reilly’s publications on hardware, the Internet of Things, manufacturing, and electronics. Before coming to O’Reilly, he was data editor at Forbes magazine. He lives in San Francisco, where he can occasionally be found at the console of a pipe organ.
Taylor Buley is a technology reporter for Forbes covering Internet infrastructure and Web services. He graduated with a masters in Communication from Stanford and a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Politics & Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, where he focused on journalism and choice and behavior, respectively. In 2007, he was a Robert Bartley Fellow at the Wall Street Journal. In 2006, he was a Burton Gray memorial intern at Reason magazine. Before that, he interned at the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

Otis is the founder and CEO of Goodreads.com – a social network for
book lovers. Launched in late 2006, the site has since grown to over

angel round in 2007, and is otherwise privately owned.
Along with a passion for building websites, Otis is also a voracious
reader. He started Goodreads as part of a personal goal to read more
books, and has found a large core group of people
that love reading, and have helped drive the direction of Goodreads.
He is an engineer at heart, and loves tinkering and listening to
customers in order to make the best product possible.
Before founding Goodreads, Otis was a Software Engineer and Product
Manager at Tickle.com. Monster Worldwide, the leading purveyor of
online jobs, purchased the company in 2004. At Tickle, Otis was in
charge of LoveHappens.com, a top ten online dating service. Otis
credits all his knowledge of building successful online media websites
to his experiences at Tickle. Otis graduated with a B.S. in
Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, where he always

William Chesser has been with Ingram since July of 2006. Mr. Chesser was instrumental in the early design, development, and implementation of the VitalBook e-textbook platform.
Prior to moving to VitalSource, Mr. Chesser was Assistant Director of Training for the National Paideia Center and K-12 teacher-training and instructional-development organization in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In that role, Mr. Chesser worked with a high-profile collection of educators from around the U.S. to develop classroom innovation strategies and techniques and to deliver them to school systems across the country.
Before working at the Paideia Center, Mr. Chesser worked in the central office for Durham Public Schools, and was a teacher and coach. He holds a bachelor of arts in English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master’s in English Literature from North Carolina Central University.
Diana Childress is VP, Business Development, where she leads the strategy for the company’s efforts to bring new, customer-driven content solutions to Blackboard’s global client community. Childress is a publishing and information industry veteran with extensive leadership experience in the convergence of content and technology within education.
At Blackboard, Childress works directly with leading companies such as Pearson, Cengage Learning, and McGraw Hill to manage partnerships that allow for the delivery of educational content directly to faculty and students through Blackboard’s e-learning platform.
Prior to joining Blackboard, Childress served in a number of executive positions with some of the largest higher education publishers and has been responsible for significant innovations in the development and delivery of education content as learners move from traditional consumption of print course materials to online learning environments.
Childress served as Senior Vice President of Marketing for Gale Cengage Learning, a leading e-research and education publishing firm, where she helped to lead a transformative print-to-digital effort that brought online Gale’s vast reference collection combined with other third party content. At Gale, Childress oversaw a $10 million marketing budget and was a key player in the re-branding of Thomson Learning to Cengage Learning.
Prior to this role, Childress served as Vice President of Marketing at WoltersKluwer Health, a $300 million health science publisher, where she oversaw a budget of more than $25 million and a staff of 75. Childress previously held executive positions at ProQuest Information & Learning, Vcampus.com, and Harcourt Brace College Publishers. Highlights include leading a groundbreaking effort to leverage Proquest’s print and digital library holdings by bringing them into the classroom via technology and leading the execution of a successful IPO with UOL Publishing (now Vcampus.com), Inc., an early LMS-content integrated solution for corporate and higher education.
Childress holds a Bachelors of Arts in Communications Arts and Marketing from C.W. Post College. She currently resides in Annapolis, Maryland and is an avid boater, fly fisherwoman and gourmet cook.
Jim Cioban is President and CEO of Cierant Corporation, a marketing software and services company based in Danbury, CT. Jim has over 30 years of experience in technology development, marketing, direct sales, channel management and business consulting. At Cierant, Jim serves as lead solutions architect for major client implementations, as well as a marketing consultant. Prior to leading Cierant and serving as its technology visionary and application evangelist, Jim founded and served for 12 years as President of Technical Marketing Systems, a B2B marketing communications and design firm. Before Technical Marketing Systems, Jim served in a variety of sales and product marketing capacities at IBM Instruments Inc., an analytical instrumentation subsidiary of IBM Corporation. Ed Colleran serves as the Senior Director of International Relations
at Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), the world’s largest provider of
copyright licensing solutions. He oversees strategic initiatives
focused on CCC’s international activities—specifically, providing
publishers around the world with new content licensing solutions and
revenue-generating initiatives based on CCC’s products and services.
Ed also provides the vision for the advancement of CCC’s digital
rights management services and is a key contributor on other long-term
strategic issues facing the information industry.
An industry veteran, Ed serves on several committees of the
International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organizations (IFFRO)
and and currently serves on American Business Media’s policy and
digital media councils. Ed was also a two-term member of the board of
the Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA). He is a
featured speaker and editorial contributor on issues such as
navigating copyright requirements and the challenges and opportunities
of managing content in a digital environment. A regular speaker at

She is one of the nation’s premiere independent Adobe Certified Instructors, teaching hands-on classes at client sites around the world and consulting with publishers to make a smooth transition to the latest software and workflows. Katie Cunningham is a Python and Django developer for Cox Media Group
by day, and is currently writing a book on 508 compliance and
accessibility by night.
While she had always had an interest in programming, it didn’t turn
into a career until she started to work at NASA. There, she slowly
transitioned from gathering requirements to developing full time,
advocating the use of more open source in the government sector.
It was at NASA that she gained an interest in 508 compliance. At
first, she was only interested in getting her applications through QA
faster. Over time, however, she gained a passion for a web that was
easy for everyone to use. Now in the private sector, she is
championing compliance even for websites that don’t require it by law.

Guinevere de la Mare is Community Manager at Chronicle Books. She launched the publisher’s social media strategy in early 2009 and has been the online voice of the brand ever since. Before honing her craft to 140 characters for @ChronicleBooks, Guinevere worked as a copywriter at Chronicle, a publicist at Rhode Island School of Design, and a market associate at Surface Magazine. She received a BA in Art History from U.C. Berkeley and holds a Master’s degree in Visual and Critical Studies from California College of the Arts.
Baskar has been associated with Newgen KnowledgeWorks since 2006, leading technology and new initiatives for strategic / innovative solutions. He comes with a background in hands-on software development, product development, and solution development for both onshore and offshore operations. Baskar spent 13 years in the Publishing and Content Management domains, addressing the technology side of the business.
John Dougherty is Director of Content Management at Hearst Corporation. He has overseen diverse technology efforts in cooperation with editorial and production teams for publications such as Elle, Woman’s Day and Car and Driver. That has included implementation of editorial workflow systems for print and tablet publications, issue planning, digital asset management, XML schemas, taxonomy management, prepress production, color management, ad and image portals, and creative software.
John has been part of a number of industry-wide initiatives, especially those pertaining to metadata, such as nextPub and PRISM. He has led or served on a number of working groups pertaining to multi-platform publishing, photo management, and usage rights.
Philip Downer is the owner of Front of Store, a consultancy that supports retailers and publishers.
He’s at TOC because he cares about the future of bookstores and reading – not from a Luddite “all change is bad” standpoint, but rather because he believes in working with retailers and publishers to ensure that today’s fundamental (and exciting) changes to format, distribution etc are as positive as possible for readers and the next generation.
Philip was CEO at Borders UK, and has also held senior positions at WH Smith/Waterstone’s (including 2½ years working in the US), as well as spending his formative years in the record business.
In addition to working with retail clients, Philip writes for a number of trade publications, and runs a popular blog. He is a member of the Publishing Advisory Board at Kingston University, London, where he has lectured MA students on “Publishing and Bookselling in the Digital Age”.

Liz Edelstein is the senior manager and editor of HeroesandHeartbreakers.com, Macmillan Publishing’s romance community. Liz is responsible for editorial direction, SEO strategies, marketing and list growth, social media, and e-book acquisitions for the site.

Rodney Elder has worked in the publishing industry for the past 10 years in Asia, Europe and North America. Kelly Gallagher serves as VP of Publishing Services at RR Bowker. In this role he manages the implementation of a host of Bowker business intelligence services, including the PubTrack Consumer research panel reaching over 40,000 ‘e’ and ‘p’ book consumers. For the past year, he has been leading a team of researchers on a three-year initiative for the Book Industry Study Group to study consumer attitudes toward e-devices and digital content. This long-term trended study looks at consumer purchases on a quarterly basis as it seeks to understand the rate and shift to digital content. In addition to managing the consumer research panel, he oversees sales data collection and analytics tools for the higher education and religious book markets for Bowker. Beyond his role at Bowker, Kelly also serves as Research Chair for the BISG.

Larry Goldberg is the founder and director of the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family
National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) at Boston’s public broadcaster
WGBH. For more than a decade he directed WGBH’s Media Access Group and
its Caption Center and Descriptive Video Service and now focuses on research
and development, public policy initiatives and strategic partnerships for global
impact. He is a leader in the international effort to assure that the design and
implementation of new technologies meet the needs of people with disabilities
and other populations who lack access. He led development of the specifications
for digital television closed captioning in the U.S. and was awarded a patent in
1996 for “Rear Window™,” the first closed-captioning system for movie theaters
and theme parks. He has developed dozens of innovative R&D projects for full
inclusion in such fields as online education and digital publishing, mobile devices
and mobile media, in-flight entertainment, home media networks, Web-based
media, theatrical motion pictures, museums and theme parks, and many others.
Larry regularly briefs Congressional and regulatory agencies on barriers and
opportunities in new and emerging media. He consults and writes about the
needs of people with disabilities for many publications and national advisory
boards and served on the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC)
Technological Advisory Council, its Consumer Advisory Committee and currently
co-chairs its Video Programming Accessibility Advisory Committee.
Larry worked closely with Cong. Ed Markey (D-MA) and House and Senate
staffers of the technology and telecommunications subcommittees, in a bipartisan
effort to draft, negotiate and pass the “21st Century Communications
and Video Accessibility Act,” which was signed into law by Pres. Obama in
October of 2010. Under that law, which expands access to new and emerging
digital media under regulations being written by the FCC, the Video Programming
Accessibility Advisory Committee (VPAAC) was established at the FCC and
Larry was named co-chair by Chairman Julius Genachowsky. The first act of the
VPAAC was to issue recommendations for extending closed captioning to
Internet-based media, which Larry and his working group delivered to the FCC
ahead of deadline and which became the basis for the Notice of Proposed
Rulemaking and the subsequent rules, due in early January 2012.
Larry is regularly consulted by the White House Domestic Policy staff on matters
pertaining to access to technology for persons with disabilities and helped
establish a standing committee within the CIO Council of the United States
government on accessible technology. At the beginning of the Obama
Administration, Larry met with the new CTO of the U.S. (Aneesh Chopra) and the
new CIO (Vivek Kundra) to brief them on issues of concern regarding inclusive
technology policies and practices.
Larry also was involved in crafting and now proliferating the media and
communications provisions of the United Nations Convention on Persons with
Disabilities, adopted in December of 2006 and which has since been signed by
153 countries. Larry has consulted with governments and NGOs in Japan, Israel,
Brazil, Mexico, India, the United Kingdom, Canada, Argentina and Russia.
He was a member of the U.S. Access Board’s Electronic and Information
Technology Access Advisory Committee (EITAAC) that established rules for
federal compliance with Section 508 and its subsequent “Refresh Committee”
which updated those rules. Larry works with technology companies such as
Apple, Disney, Microsoft, Verizon, Panasonic, AT&T, Yahoo!, HP, Adobe, and
others on solutions to meet the needs of consumers with disabilities. His
undergraduate degree focused on Cinema Studies and Broadcast Journalism at
University of Southern California.
Seattle-born, techy, book nerd, and perfectionist, Amanda received Master’s degree in Book Publishing from Portland State University. A lifelong obsession with art, marketing statistics, and digital trends led her to realize the potential for ebooks to entertain and inspire readers instead of annoying and frustrating them in the way they often do. Partnering with design-savvy tech guru Tom McCluskey, Amanda co-founded Digital Bindery to solve digital publishing problems with particular attention to the artisan aesthetic.
Theodore Gray is an award-winning software developer, author, and popularizer of science. Having started out in chemistry, he joined Stephen Wolfram in 1987 in the creation of Mathematica. Gray pioneered the concept of Mathematica notebooks—which serve as the main interface to Mathematica, and have made possible the creation of millions of interactive computable documents. Ever since the founding of Wolfram Research, Gray has guided its user interface strategy, and has been responsible for a sequence of major innovations.
Over the years Gray has developed an independent interest in science writing and in communicating the excitement and importance of science to a wide audience. He is a Contributing Editor at Popular Science magazine, and has authored its Gray Matter column since 2003. George Kerscher began his IT innovations in 1987 and coined the term “print disabled.” George is dedicated to developing technologies that make information not only accessible, but also fully functional in the hands of persons who are blind or who have a print disability. He believes properly designed information systems can make all information accessible to all people and is working to push evolving technologies in this direction.
As Secretary General of the DAISY Consortium and President of the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), Kerscher is a recognized international leader in document access. In addition, Kerscher is the Senior Officer of Accessible Technology at Learning Ally in the USA. He chairs the DAISY/NISO Standards committee, the EPUB Maintenance working group and the W3C’s Steering Council for the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI). George also serves on the USA National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS) Board.

Jonathan is an Emmy award-winning software engineer and the author of the O’Reilly book “Programming Social Applications.” He specializes in open source initiatives around the implementation of social engagement services. As a software engineer, Jonathan works extensively with social interaction development, engaging in new methods for targeting the social footprint of users to drive the ideal of an open web.
Vladimir Levantovsky is a senior technology strategist at Monotype Imaging Inc. and currently serves as a chair of the W3C Web Fonts Working Group and a chair of the ISO SC29/WG11 ad-hoc group on font format representation. He has been involved in the work of various industry consortiums and standards organizations since 2002, and is passionate about advancing typographic capabilities on CE and mobile devices and on the Web. member Kerry Schafer, whose community-workshopped book BETWEEN was
acquired in a two-book deal by Berkley this past January. Colleen
served as the director of publicity for Random House’s Del Rey Books
for five years, where she specialized in the creative promotion of
SF/F, licensed media, pop culture non-fiction, and graphic novels;
most recently she worked as a literary agent focused on debut genre
fiction writers. Colleen has called the book industry home since 1984.
Victor is the founder of Nickel, the TurboTax of financial plans. Previously he wrote the book “Why We Fail: Learning from Experience Design Failures”, co-founded the Information Architecture Institute & the Overlap conference, taught at the Parsons School of Design, the Pratt Institute, and Rutgers University, and contributed to the design of over 40 software and Internet products over the past 20 years.
Raised in rural Nova Scotia, Matt attended Harvard University where he earned a degree in Computer Engineering and Chinese Language. He moved to California and pursued an eight-year career at Apple where he managed the company’s international expansion into international education markets. During that time, Matt saw a lot of misuse of technology in the classroom, and in 2009 his frustration drove him to start Inkling. His technical foundation, coupled with his experience with Apple, positioned him well to start and grow the company. With a vision for reinventing publishing, Matt has led Inkling into partnerships with the world’s largest publishers, building engaging, interactive learning content from the ground up for iPad. Praveen Madan is a literary entrepreneur who quit his cushy corporate job in consulting and technology to focus on building the community bookstore for the 21st century. Praveen kicked-off his pursuit in 2007 by teaming up with Christin Evans to acquire and transform the Booksmith bookstore in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury. In 2009, he partnered with Cody’s long-term events manager Melissa Mytinger to launch Berkeley Arts & Letters, which has become one of the top speaking series in the Bay Area. Recently Praveen stepped in to save Kepler’s, the iconic Bay Area bookstore, from imminent closure and is working closely with a group of community champions to transform Kepler’s into a next generation literary venture built around a new level of community engagement, stewardship, and sustainability. Praveen is also on the Board of Berrett-Koehler Publishers.

Roger Magoulas is the research director at O’Reilly Media and chair of Strata + Hadoop World conferences. Christophe F. Maire,
Entrepreneur focusing on product innovation in digital media and mobile. Christophe founded and is currently CEO of txtr.com, the largest distribution networks for eBooks in Europe (and soon globally). The company partners with mobile operators and device makers to compete in the fast growing digital publishing business.
Christophe was the founder of gate5, a global leader in mobile navigation software, which he sold to Nokia in 2006. Today, Nokia Maps, the unit which emerged from gate5, employs more than 1000 Employees in Berlin. Christophe was also cofounder of plazes.com, a company which pioneered “checking-in” (and was bought by Nokia in 2008). Christophe is further a co-founder of phonedeck.com (phone in browser app) and eyeem.com (topical photo-sharing service). Earlier he built the largest digital film studio on the site of the East German film studio attracting Euro 40m investments from Vivendi, Bertelsmann etc. Christophe attended school in St.Gallen, ESADE and Stanford and worked in Asia for a few years.
A Swiss citizen, Christophe lives in Berlin with his wife and 2 children. Christophe is quite active in the Berlin tech scene and was for instance involved in the build-up of brands4friends, plista, barcoo, readmill, appaware, amen, and soundcloud where he sits on the board.
A 1988 graduate of the School of Printing at Rochester Institute of Technology, Steve found his passion for type and typography among the historic collections of books, metal type, type-casting equipment and printing presses. In 1990 Steve was hired by Monotype Typography as a contractor to aid in the production of Microsoft’s first TrueType fonts. Having already spent over two years mastering the hinting algorithms of a similar technology for another company, TrueType was an easy transition, and produced fonts for OEM customers such as Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft. Working on the technical aspects of type helped fuel Steve’s ambition to design new typefaces. He completed a handwriting design called Andy and a revival of Frederic Goudy’s Truesdell in 1993. These were quickly followed by a screen font design for main frame terminal emulation (Andalé), Blueprint, Fineprint, Binner Gothic, Goudy Ornate, and user interface fonts for the original Xbox, Windows Vista and the Android OS.

Micah received his BA in Philosophy and Political Science from the University of Colorado (Magna Cum Laude) and his JD from Harvard Law School. He worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Co for four year, were he helped found the McKinsey Center for the Advancement of Problem Solving, an internal think tank that developed innovative problem solving techniques and helped McKinsey teams implement them with clients. He is now the Director of Strategy at the New York Public Library. He leads the Library’s strategic planning work and it’s project management office and advises senior management on real time strategic decisions.

Daniel Mayer is VP of Corporate Marketing at TEMIS, the leading provider of semantic content enrichment solutions for the Enterprise. In this capacity he is responsible for promoting, as well as shaping, the flagship Luxid® product range and its roadmap with a particular focus on STM Publishing and Enterprise Information Management. Prior to joining TEMIS, Daniel served for the past 12 years in a variety of marketing and product strategy functions throughout the IT value chain. Tom has been involved in publishing as an editor, lead designer, and ebook guru both in the Pacific Northwest and on the East Coast. Kristen McLean is the founder and CEO of Bookigee, an innovative visualizing search engine for the book industry, Before founding Bookigee, Kristen was the Executive Director of the Association of Booksellers for Children (ABC), a non-profit trade association founded in 1984 that networks the children’s book industry. Under Kristen’s leadership, ABC merged with its larger sister association, the American Booksellers Association (ABA) in 2011, where its work continues. Kristen holds a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, and has done graduate work in Graphic and Industrial Design at Massachusetts College of Art. Prior to joining ABC in 2005, Kristen spent twelve years in the book and toy industry in various roles including frontline retailing, merchandising, buying, commission sales, and managing marketing for one of Houghton Mifflin’s trade children’s imprints. Maureen McMahon is president and publisher of Kaplan Publishing, one of the nation’s leading publishers of academic and professional resources in print and digital formats. In addition to overseeing content production, delivery, and management for Kaplan Test Prep course and retail products, she oversees Kaplan Labs, an initiative that focuses on the potential for emerging technologies to improve learning outcomes; Kaplan Mobile; and EPUB 3 product development.

Peter Meirs is the Vice President of Production Technologies for Time Inc. and an affiliate of the MIT Media Lab.
Peter’s role is to oversee technologies and information systems that support the production and distribution of Time Inc. magazines. These groups include the Time Inc. digital archive group (E-MaG), the Digital Development Group, the OMS Print group (magazine planning), Time Inc. paper and production information systems (TimeXchange) and production systems development. Peter is also a founding member of the PRISM XML standard working group and he co-leads efforts on the emerging nextPub XML specification. Since joining Time Inc. in 1992, Peter has overseen its digital advertising and transmission systems, directed TIME Magazine Editorial Operations and managed Time Inc.’s conversion to a fully digital production workflow. Peter is a frequent speaker at industry events on the subject of digital publishing technologies.
As Vice President and Creative Director at Dow Jones, Greg Merkle is responsible for overseeing the user experience design of the Content Technology Solutions within the Dow Jones Enterprise Media Group. With more than 20 years experience in the electronic publishing and information industry, Mr. Merkle Greg has both the big picture vision of where and how information is being used as well as the implementation expertise to bring goal and task oriented products and solutions to market.
Previously, he was Associate Vice President, Product Design at Factiva and was responsible for user experience design for all products and services of Factiva. This included working strategically with the Factiva product organization and customers to prototype business ideas and build innovative products and solutions to meet their needs. The design group disciplines include: Information Architecture, Market Validation, Interface/Interaction Design, Human Factors/Usability and Data visualization.
Prior to this appointment Mr. Merkle had the role of Creative Director/Product Design and headed the product and interface design team at Dow Jones where he introduced user focused design principles and usability prior the Internet revolution.
Mr. Merkle joined Dow Jones in 1993 as an Art Director. He later focused on User Interface Design with the release of: Personal Journal, Dow Jones News/Retrieval, Dow Vision, The Dow Jones Business Center on America Online, Dow Jones Publications Library and Dow Jones Interactive.

I co-founded one of the first multimedia textbook publishers (Digital Learning Interactive, sold in 2004 to Thomson Learning). Dana Newman is a transactional and intellectual property attorney, advising creators and

Patrick has always been an enthusiastic and engaged reader of books, so when she started writing about authors and publishing in 1996, she brought her own interest to the stories she told and the writers she interviewed.
In 2001, after years of freelance writing, Patrick joined the team of PAGES Magazine as editor at large. While at PAGES, Patrick did something few book critics did; she looked beyond the borders of the United States, writing a regular column called “Global View,” focusing on international writers and publishing.
Three years later, in 2004 and long before the digital revolution, Patrick launched the AOL Books Channel, reaching more readers than ever before through the largest web portal in the world and where her book critic channel, “The Book Maven,” was born.

William Patry is Senior Copyright Counsel at Google Inc. He previously served as copyright counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on the Judiciary, and as a Policy Planning Advisor to the U.S. Register of Copyrights. For 12 years, he was also in the private practice of law, litigating copyright cases in court and advising clients. He is the most prolific scholar on copyright in history, in any language, beginning with a 6,500 page treatise, Patry on Copyright. His most recent book is How to Fix Copyright (Oxford University Press, January 2012). He is an avid bass clarinetist.

Jesse Potash is the founder of Pubslush, a global, crowdsourcing publishing platform for authors to raise funds and gauge the initial audience for new book ideas. Pubslush also operates an independent imprint that acquires books from the platform, and for every book sold, donates a children’s book to a child in need. Jesse hails from a financial services background but has worked additionally across a wide array of industries including publishing, fashion, and advertising. Jan is Co-Founder and President of Mendeley, one of the world’s largest research collaboration platforms, with thousands of users and research groups and millions of research papers. He co-founded and served as CTO of IMVU, his third startup. In 2007, BusinessWeek named him one of the Best Young Entrepreneurs of Tech. In 2009, he was honored with a TechFellow award in the category of Engineering Leadership. Gary Rodrigues is a veteran in the publishing industry. He graduated as a Materials Scientist and Metallurgist from Aston University in the UK and entered publishing as an Editor for Thomson Scientific in the late 80’s. Over the next decade and a half Gary was instrumental developing business models as customers migrated from print to electronic subscription access to Thomson’s patent information services. His claim to fame is one of the first online demonstrations of database access via a dial up to the Indian Pharmaceutical industry in Delhi in 1989. Julie Sandorf has served as president of the Charles H. Revson Foundation since January 2008. Before joining the Foundation, Ms. Sandorf was the co-founder and executive director of Nextbook, a national organization dedicated to the creation and promotion of Jewish literature, culture, and the arts. From 1991 through 1999, she was president of the Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH), an organization she founded that worked in partnership with philanthropic foundations, over 200 nonprofit organizations, and government at the local, state, and national levels to deliver permanent solutions to chronic homelessness.
Prior to founding CSH, Ms. Sandorf was a program director at the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), where she forged a groundbreaking public-private partnership to revitalize distressed neighborhoods throughout New York City. She has also served as senior program consultant to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, directing the Foundation’s After School Project, and has worked as a consultant to the Rockefeller Foundation, the Oak Foundation, and the Pew Charitable Trusts.
Ms. Sandorf currently serves on the advisory board of the Oak Foundation, is chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Center for Urban Community Services, and a member of the board of directors of the West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing. After completing a B.A. in interface design at Hampshire College, Nat earned his master’s degree in Communication at the University of California San Diego, studying educational software design and developmental psychology. Nat then worked for 10 years developing educational media for museums, including a multimillion-dollar visitor center for the City of Tucson and exhibits such as The Life & Times of Woody Guthrie for the Smithsonian Institution. Nat has presented at over a dozen conferences on education and technology, including the White House Internet Summit, Mobile Portland, and the Institute for the Future.
Peter Sís is an internationally acclaimed illustrator, author, and filmmaker. He was born in Brno, Czechoslovakia, in 1949 and attended the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague and the Royal College of Art in London. He began his career as a filmmaker and won the Golden Bear Award at the 1980 West Berlin Film Festival for an animated short. He has also won the Grand Prix Toronto and the Cine Golden Eagle Award, and in 1983 collaborated with Bob Dylan on You Got to Serve Somebody. His film work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
In 1982 he was sent by the Czech government to Los Angeles to produce a film for the 1984 Winter Olympics. But the film project was canceled when Czechoslovakia and the entire Eastern bloc decided to boycott the Olympics. Ordered by his government to return home, Peter decided to stay in the United States and was granted asylum. A correspondence with Maurice Sendak led to a meeting and Peter’s introduction to children’s book editors, and he moved to New York City in 1984 to begin a new career.
Sís quickly became one of the leading artists in the field with the publication of the 1986 Newbery Medal Winner, The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleishman. With more than twenty books to his credit and almost as many honors, Peter is a six-time winner of The New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year for Rainbow Rhino, Beach Ball, Follow the Dream, Komodo!, The Three Golden Keys, and The Tree of Life: Charles Darwin. Komodo! and A Small Tall Tale from the Far Far North were each named a Boston Globe-Horn Book Award Honor Book, and he has won a Society of Illustrators Gold Medal for Komodo! and a Silver Medal for The Three Golden Keys. Peter’s book Starry Messenger: Galileo Galilei was a 1997 Caldecott Honor Book and has been published in English, French, German, Czech, Portuguese, Greek, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Spanish. Madlenka, Madlenka’s Dog, and The Tree of Life: Charles Darwin were all named New York Times Book Review Notable Children’s Books of the Year.
In 2003, Peter was named a MacArthur Fellow, an honor bestowed by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation recognizing “talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction.”
In addition to his prolific career as an author, Peter Sís has contributed more than a thousand drawings to The New York Times Book Review and his illustrations have appeared in Time magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, Newsweek, Esquire and many other magazines in the United States and abroad.
He has designed many book jackets and posters, including, in 1984, the famous poster for Milos Forman’s Academy Award-winning motion picture Amadeus. More recently, he has completed a mural for the Washington/Baltimore Airport, a poster for the New York City subway system, and a stage set for the Joffrey Ballet. He lends his art to many mediums and will sometimes paint on any surface he can find — chairs, walls, eggs, boxes, seashells, even hats. Peter recently created a mural for New York City’s 86th Street Lexington Avenue subway station, working with the city’s Metropolitan Transit Authority. His work has been exhibited in Prague, London, Zurich, Hamburg, Los Angeles, and New York in both group and one-man shows.
In 2007, Peter published The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain (Frances Foster Books / Farrar, Straus and Giroux / September 2007). Václav Havel, former president of the Czech Republic, says of the work, “Peter Sís’s book is most of all about the will to live one’s life in freedom and should be required reading for all those who take their freedom for granted.” In January 2008, the book was awarded The Robert F. Sibert Medal and was also named a Caldecott Honor Book. The Conference Of The Birds, published by Penguin, is the most recent book by Peter.

Lynn Terhune, POD & USR Administrator of John Wiley & Sons / Corporate, has over 18 years of production, manufacturing and estimating experience in the publishing industry. Over the past 12 years Lynn has led the Wiley charge to keep books in print through the use of digital technology.
In 1995 Lynn joined Wiley as an Associate Manager of Estimating for the Publishing Support Operations group in Corporate Finance. In 2003, with a whole team of IT, Operations, Inventory and Manufacturing folks behind her, she launched the Wiley POD Program which currently includes over 6,500 titles and has grown to become a multimillion dollar revenue opportunity for Wiley.

Len Vlahos is the executive director of the Book Industry Study Group, a national not-for-profit trade association whose mission is to create a more informed, efficient, and empowered supply chain. Prior to joining BISG, Len spent nearly 20 years at the American Booksellers Association, where he served as ABA’s communications director, e-commerce director, education director, and most recently, Chief Operating Officer. Len has worked for Internet marketing pioneer Yoyodyne, and for Kratz & Co. public relations. Prior to joining ABA, he worked in independent, chain, and university bookstores. He lives in Connecticut with his wife Kristen, and two sons, Charlie and Luke.
Walter heads up codeMantra’s Publishing Services Division. He has more than 18 years of commercial publishing experience, having held VP Sales & Marketing positions at Simon & Schuster, Inc. and marketing and public relations positions with Bantam Doubleday Dell and McClelland & Stewart (both now part of Random House). Walter started his career in digital publishing in 2000, with a progressive and optimistic start-up offering Digital Rights Management solutions. He then ventured into industrial publishing, where he marketed and sold high-end dynamic enterprise publishing (DEP) solutions for Advent 3B2, Arbortext and PTC Inc. Walter’s extensive understanding of publishing processes and the expanding market for digital content supports a practical assessment of where, and how, XML technologies can best be applied.
Michelle Weir is the Market Development Manager focusing on the Publishing Segment. She is responsible for working with the Publishers on defining new areas of opportunities that enable the transformation to digital platforms for both content and print. Michelle is responsible for solution creation and definition, defining digital manufacturing specifications together with the Publishers and assisting in defining implementation strategies together with Services Providers. She will also lead and be responsible for creating the awareness of these solutions among internal and external stakeholders.
Michelle has twenty-five years experience in the Publishing Marketplace all focused on the transformation of traditional publishing workflows, applications and manufacturing. She has spent the last ten years specializing in Education Publishers, supporting their transition to a new Education Eco-system. Currently, she is supporting a US Department of Education taskforce on Digital Textbooks and Race to the Top programs.
Prior to joining HP, Michelle worked for Xerox Corporation in various assignments including Sales, Marketing and Product Development. Her areas of expertise include systems design, integration, software, solutions, project management, XML/content management, book manufacturing and commercial print manufacturing processes. She was awarded the Xerox Presidents Award in 1997 for her work on Xerox’ digital workflow platform enabling the transformation from traditional book manufacturing process to new digital print technologies.
Michelle is an active member of the Book Industry Study Group, Library Binding Institute and sits on the Board of Directors for the Book Manufacturing Institute. She also is a member of the Digital Print and Literacy committees for BMI.

In 2006, as Chief Creative Officer, Werdelin was part of the team that started Joost.com and was responsible for visual identity and product development. Dale Williams is a Vice President at Strategic Content Imaging in Carlstadt NJ with responsibilities for Operations, Market Development, and Technical Sales. Among his responsibilities is working with publishers to develop customized solutions that take advantage of the emerging digital print and workflow technologies to improve their top and bottom lines. The scope and complexity of these programs range from automated inventory management programs for the Education market to high volume personalized communications for the Healthcare and Financial markets. Dale has been the point contact for developing the personalized magazine advertisement program with the major magazine publishers in the US and has been intricately involved with all aspects of project development from conception to execution.

Adam Witwer oversees the Publishing Services division at O’Reilly Media. He manages print, ebook/digital development, video production, and manufacturing.
Adam managed the O’Reilly production department’s transition to an XML-based workflow. In the process, he became an expert in the challenges of publishing to multiple sources and formats from a single source. He now focuses on ebook development at O’Reilly and thinking about the next generation of books.
Marcus spent 12 years working as an archaeologist and photographer in the Middle East and South America before he began his career in the information world by microfilming historical documents for UMI/ProQuest. He became Product Manager for K-12 at ProQuest and, and after four years in the K-12 space moved in to a role as Director of Publisher Relations, working primarily with journal and newspaper publishers.
After ten years with ProQuest, he moved to Ingram Digital in 2007 where he was responsible for working with primarily academic and STM eBook publishers that are moving in to the digital space. In this capacity he also worked closely with the Coutts, MyiLibrary and Lightning Source teams to maximize the reach of content in the ever-changing digital information world.
In 2010 Marcus took on a new role heading up digital content development, in particular centered on Ingram’s CoreSource digital asset management product and associated business solutions for publishers.
Marcus brings a broad knowledge of digital publishing, sales and distribution for journals, newspapers and eBooks. His experience working with customers that employ a variety of strategies in reaching the fast-evolving digital market provides him with a broad perspective. His understanding of the technologies used and the competitive landscape further enhance that digital world-view.
Marcus is a regular speaker at industry conferences and events and has provided guidance to numerous publishers looking to realize a comprehensive digital strategy.
Jan Wright has been indexing and taxonomizing since 1991. Her experience in technical documentation indexing goes deep, from her experience as a print production specialist at Aldus Corporation, her work for Visio Corporation on online help and translated indexes, her work for several Microsoft departments in indexing, online help, taxonomies, and controlled vocabularies, and for Autodesk, where her indexes are translated into multiple languages, in an XML system that repurposes the content into multiple output formats, languages, and versions. She has been a member of the American Society for Indexing since 1991, has won several awards from the Society for Technical Communication, and in 2009 won the American Society for Indexing/H.W. Wilson Award for Excellence in Indexing for her index to Real World InDesign CS3. She is currently co-chairing the American Society for Indexing’s Digital Trends Task Force, focusing on eBook and eContent indexing and search.
Junko Yokota is Professor of Reading and Language at National Louis University (Chicago) and Director of the Center for Teaching through Children’s Books. She was an elementary classroom teacher and school librarian for the first ten years of her career. Her work focuses on issues of culture, picture books and digital formats of children’s literature. She is coauthor of five editions of the college textbook, Children’s Books in Children’s Hands, served as editor of two children’s literature review columns, and authored numerous journal articles and chapters in edited books. She is past president of USBBY, the U.S. national section of the IBBY. She served on ALA Caldecott and Newbery Committees, chaired the Batchelder Committee, and served two terms on the IBBY Hans Christian Andersen Award jury. She currently serves on the American Library Association Digital Content Working Group as a representative from the Association of Library Services for Children.
